Bishop Ireton Announces New Varsity Head Football Coach

ALEXANDRIA, VA - February 12, 2024 - Bishop Ireton is excited to announce the hiring of a new varsity head football coach. The Cardinals welcome Bernard Joseph to the BI Athletic family.

Coach Joseph has more than three decades of football coaching experience including serving as the head football coach at McNamara, another WCAC school, in the early 2000s. Most recently, Coach Joseph was the head football coach at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes where he led the most successful 10-year run in recent history between 2011 and 2021. In his final season, he guided the team to a 7-3 record and an appearance in the competitive Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) playoff.
"I am excited Coach Bernard Joseph will be joining the Bishop Ireton community,” said Athletic Director Dwayne Bryant. “With his proven track record of leadership, dedication to player development and commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, I am confident that Coach Joseph will lead our football program to new heights. His passion for the game and dedication to the holistic development of student-athletes align perfectly with our school's values, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact he will have on our athletes both on and off the field."

In addition to his work as the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes head football coach for more than a decade, Coach Joseph has also worked as an Upper School Athletic Director since 2009. At Bishop Ireton, Coach Joseph will also serve at BI as an Athletics Operations Assistant.

“Coach Joseph brings expertise in athletic operational procedure and will be a great asset to our existing Athletic Department,” said Head of School Kathleen McNutt. “Most importantly, he will be a tremendous leader for the Cardinal football program. His focus on faith and character in conjunction with scholarship and athleticism is just the right fit for BI.”

Coach Joseph will look to build on a turnaround year for the Bishop Ireton Cardinals that saw the team finish 7-4 with an appearance in the WCAC semifinals.

“I am thrilled to become a part of the Cardinal community and I’m eager to contribute to the growth of the football program. I aim to make it one of the best in the area” said Coach Joseph. “I feel honored that the administration has entrusted me with the responsibility to lead this endeavor.”

Coach Joseph will begin his work in the Athletic Department in July 2024 and will immediately begin preparations for the 2024 football season, which will commence officially in August 2024.
