Extra time, extra sweet, Cardinals claim third straight VISAA title, 8-7
Before a VISAA record crowd at Episcopal's Hummel Bowl, St Stephens & St Agnes School and Bishop Ireton met for the 5th consecutive year to decide the Division I girls' lacrosse championship. It was a game for the ages, with Ireton building a 5-1 halftime lead, only to see a 2-goal margin evaporate in the game's last two minutes. The four overtime affair became an instant classic, particularly for the Cambridge Road faithful, when Brianna Lantuh ended it with a goal 61 minutes and 45 seconds after they began.
Saints' freshman Rita Peterson scored with :01 to play in regulation and, with that, the top-seeded St Stephens had erased the halftime deficit with a 6-2 second half run of their own. And, momentum seemed to be wearing a white jersey. Enter Ashley Bowan, the Cardinals' freshman goalie.
