letter from the director of athletics
Perhaps you are as surprised as I am to see the name Bill Simmons back as Athletic Director for Bishop Ireton. When asked to work on a temporary basis, I was glad to help and amazed at the scope of the renovations underway. That quickly turned to excitement for the potential opportunities for our school community; not only in the facilities, but for the community of students and families, faculty, staff and alumni. The dreams and hard work of nearly 20 years is coming to fruition in the next few months. We have an exciting year ahead of us!
Athletic participation adds an important experience to young people’s high school years. Education-based sports programs teach life lessons often only learned in athletics, lessons that continue to benefit our young people long after the games are over. I encourage all of our students to look at the many programs we offer as another “elective” in their preparation for life. I look forward to seeing our Cardinals, as well as their families and friends, on Cambridge Road as another school year begins. See the schedule for our fall sports below and check back on our website and social media channels for up-to-date times and locations for practices and games. More than ever it really is GREAT to be a Cardinal.
After more than a decade leading the Cardinals' ice hockey program, Anthony "Tony" DiCarlo was selected as the Bishop Ireton Athletic Department's Coach of the Year for 2019-2020. The Coach commented on the award by saying, "I am honored to be named by my peers as Coach of the Year. It was a pleasure to coach this group of players and I share this award with my invaluable assistants and I am thankful for the leadership of a great Senior Class."
Bishop Ireton's varsity head coaches selected field hockey junior varsity head coach Meredith Tombs as the Athletic Department's Chris Delaware Memorial Assistant Coach of the Year award for 2019-2020. The Chris Delaware Award is named for former boys' lacrosse assistant coach Chris Delaware, a Bishop Ireton alumnus. Delaware was serving as a boys' varsity assistant coach when he died suddenly at his work.
The Alexandria Sportsman's Club honored an abbreviated number of athletes of the year in their announcement Tuesday. With the coronavirus pandemic, city high schools lost their spring sports seasons reducing the overall number of athletes to be honored.
Sean Casey, parent of a pair of 2020 Ireton graduates and two-year president of the Bishop Ireton Athletic Booster Club, was named the School's first winner of the Peter G. Davey Service Award. The newly named award honors the School's tireless director of operations and facilities following 21 years of service to Bishop Ireton High School. Davey retires May 31st.
