Cardinals Tryouts August 2022

Bishop Ireton High School Women’s Soccer Tryouts
Fall 2022

WHEN ARE TRYOUTS?
Tryouts are 7:00 am – 10:00 am on August 12, 15 and 16 - Location TBA
Each individual student-athlete is responsible for her fitness, effort, commitment, contribution to the team, attendance, and all state, school and program requirements for academic performance and personal conduct. All players are held accountable for following the soccer program rules and expectations.
DO I HAVE TO REGISTER FOR TRYOUTS?
Every student-athlete participating in tryouts will need proof of a current physical to be allowed to tryout for fall sports. No exceptions. Coaches do not accept physicals. The physical must be submitted electronically through the MAGNUS system which is part of the school’s registration process. There is also a required concussion protocol which must be completed by all student-athletes and their parents.  Contact the Ireton Athletic Office during the Summer for more details.

HOW MANY TEAMS WILL THERE BE?
We plan to have 2 teams this season: Varsity and Junior Varsity.

ARE THERE PLAYER CUTS?
We expect over 50 students to attend tryouts. We often have more players trying out for placement in the program than we have space.  Seniors who try out must make the Varsity team. We encourage everyone to tryout.  We are extremely supportive of anyone with an interest in learning, improving and developing as soccer players and often offer opportunities to remain involved with the program.

ARE ALL TRYOUT DATES MANDATORY?
Yes. Three days of tryouts are provided to give each student-athlete the opportunity to demonstrate their soccer fitness and performance. It is very competitive to make a Bishop Ireton High School Soccer team. Unexcused absences causing student-athletes to miss tryout sessions may jeopardize your chances of making a team, especially missing due to not completing your physical. Get your physical during the summer! Please let your parents/guardian know how important tryout participation is to your goals of playing soccer at Bishop Ireton High School. Summer jobs and summer camps are NOT approved excuses to miss tryouts.

IF I AM SICK OR INJURED SHOULD I STILL COME TO TRYOUTS?
Injured students should still come to tryouts if they are to be considered for placement on a team. If a student is sick, please contact Coach Alaoui (571.224.4792).

WHEN ARE TRYOUT RESULTS ANNOUNCED?:
Tryout results will be shared with each player by Coach Alaoui and the coaching staff on the last day of tryouts.

HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED?
Team coaches and assistant coaches conduct the evaluation process. Each student at tryouts will have ample opportunity to showcase themselves.
• Roster size and composition: The Varsity team is composed of 18 student-athletes who receive the vast majority of playing time.
• All student-athletes in good standing, regardless of their grade level, are eligible to “make” Varsity.
• Seniors must make the Varsity team or they are not eligible to participate.
• The Junior Varsity team while competitive is a developmental team at Bishop Ireton High School. Everything above applies to the Junior Varsity team with a few adjustments.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
Situational/game performance.  Players will be evaluated on their use of technique and creativity in effectively playing  1 v.1’s, 2 v.1’s , 5 v. 5’s and other small and full-sided games.   Specifically, the coaches look to evaluate the five core components of a Cardinal soccer player:
(1) Technical ability “soccer skill” — speed of play, successful application of skill at high speed and while under high pressure.
(2) Tactical awareness and application — speed of thought, ability to read the game and make good decisions under pressure, assertive and intelligent movement with and without the ball
(3) Physical development, conditioning and attributes – speed, quickness, strength, agility, aerobic capacity
(4) Psychological – maturity, competitive spirit, drive, teamwork, focus, attentiveness, leadership, communication, mental toughness, cooperation
(5) Impact – a players ability to make a positive contribution to the team on both on and off the field.

FITNESS EXPECTATIONS:
Fitness performance.  Players will be assessed on their fitness based on their performance on the following tests:
(1) Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test 1 – Varsity Level 15.3 and JV Level 14.3.
(2) 50 Yard Dash - Times and scores will be recorded and evaluated.

The high school soccer season is too short for student-athletes to expect to “get into shape” during the season.  Preseason begins immediately following tryouts daily from 7:00 am – 10 am.   It takes at least eight weeks to be in “game” shape. The average high school varsity soccer player can run over 6 miles a game. Student-athletes need to come to tryouts already in game shape.
