School Profile

Bishop Ireton High School, a Catholic high school within the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, was founded in 1964 by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales with whom the school remains affiliated. The coeducational, college preparatory high school, grades nine through twelve, operates on a semester system. Emphasis is placed on the Salesian community of learning and the principles of Christian living and academic preparation for continuing education. These goals are pursued through the school motto modeled on the words of Pope Paul VI, “advance always.”

Mission Statement

In the Catholic tradition and in the spirit of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop Ireton High School is a college preparatory high school that promotes spiritual, intellectual, creative, social and physical development.

As a Salesian community of learning and service, Bishop Ireton High School prepares and inspires students to Advance Always with a Christ-centered focus to meet and surpass current and future global challenges.


Members of the Bishop Ireton faculty and administration are individuals chosen for their dedication to Christian standards as well as expertise in their field.

Distribution of Credits

The minimum credit requirements for each academic department are listed below. Upon graduation, students will have accumulated 26.5 credits during their four years at BI.

  • Science - 4 credits
  • World  Language* - 3 credits**
  • Physical Education - 1.5 credits
  • Fine Arts - 1 credit

Community Service

Students perform 60 hours of approved community service over four years (15 hours per year), balanced between on and off-campus commitments.

Fine Arts

Bishop Ireton's Symphonic Wind Ensemble enjoys a reputation as one of the country's leading educational models. The Drama department holds the distinction as one of the area's finest programs. Student Life

Co-curricular activities offer additional opportunities for student's personal and spiritual growth. A sampling of the clubs and activities include Campus Ministry, Beta Club, Drama Club, French Club, Model United Nations, International Thespian Society, Student Government, National Honor Society, and the Economics Club.


The Bishop Ireton Cardinals compete in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference in both boy's and girls' sports. Bishop Ireton offers a full range of athletic teams in three levels: freshmen, junior varsity and varsity. In 2017-2018, 64% of the student body participated in one or more of the 45 team sports offered at Bishop Ireton.
