v. DeMatha Catholic High School

The Bishop Ireton Boys JV Soccer squad faced a challenging test against DeMatha Catholic High School in what was expected to be a difficult contest.
The opening twenty minutes proved costly, as lapses in defensive organization and communication led to two early goals for DeMatha. However, Bishop Ireton responded by staying true to their identity, continuing to focus on a possession-based approach aimed at progressing the ball through midfield and into the final third. While these efforts often broke down at the final hurdle, they reflected the team’s growing confidence in building play rather than relying solely on long passes. The halftime score stood at 2–0 in favor of DeMatha.

The second half began promisingly, as Bishop Ireton held sustained periods of possession, forcing DeMatha to chase the ball. However, the opposition eventually regained control and capitalized with another goal. This setback was compounded by the unfortunate withdrawal of midfielder Paul Scolese, who had to leave the match with a back injury.

From that point onward, the match followed a familiar pattern—brief stretches of possession and structured play from Ireton, followed by turnovers that DeMatha quickly punished. The game concluded with a 6–0 result in favor of DeMatha, but despite the scoreline, there were encouraging signs of development in the Cardinals’ approach and teamwork.

Several players delivered standout performances. Deven Sinha played a vital role as a link between midfield and attack, keeping possession well and serving as a focal point in offensive transitions. Goalkeeper Sean Hendricks once again distinguished himself, making numerous key one-on-one saves and providing vocal leadership to organize the defense. Lastly, Gabriel Maza continued his impressive form from previous matches, maintaining possession under pressure, communicating effectively, and displaying excellent defensive discipline. His consistent performances earned him a well-deserved call-up to the Varsity squad.
