VISAA Championships

Bishop Ireton Swim & Dive closed out its season at the VISAA State Championship Meet in Richmond, Virginia, with 30 qualifying athletes representing the Cardinals.
The boys team finished 24th out of 42 teams, highlighted by a finals appearance from the 200 Medley Relay (Jack Fuqua ’26, Connor Corley ’27, Peter Johnson ’26, Jack Lentini ’27). Individually, Jack Lentini advanced in the 100 Freestyle, while senior Jack Fuqua earned finals swims in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Freestyle.

The girls team placed 11th out of 40 teams, with all three relays advancing to finals:
• 200 Medley Relay (Avery VanLandingham ’28, Sophie Bliss ’27, Lainey Hooff ’28, Marcella Forrer ’26)
• 200 Freestyle Relay (Sophie Bliss, Clover Kennelly ’27, Caroline Smullen ’26, Leah Eubanks ’29)
• 400 Freestyle Relay (VanLandingham, Eubanks, Hooff, Forrer)

Individual finalists included Leah Eubanks (200 Freestyle - lifetime best and just 0.2 off a 2009 school record; 500 Freestyle), Lainey Hooff (100 Butterfly, 500 Freestyle - also a lifetime best and less than 5 seconds off a 1988 school record), Marcella Forrer (50 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke), and Avery VanLandingham (200 IM, 100 Backstroke).

Two school records fell during the meet. For the third time this season, VanLandingham lowered her 100 Backstroke record. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of VanLandingham, Eubanks, Hooff, and Forrer also broke the 4x100 Freestyle Relay school record by three seconds with a time of 3:38.60.

The Cardinals capped off an outstanding season with a strong championship showing and multiple record-breaking performances. Looking forward to being back on deck next year!
