St. Mary's Ryken travelled to Alexandria for a big end-of-the-week WCAC game.
It took a while for the Cardinals bats to get rolling as they trailed 8-1 going into the bottom of the 5th. The lone run came in the bottom of the 4th when leadoff batter Rachel Klaric hit over the LF's head for a triple to wake up the dugout. Ciara Funk knocked Klaric in with a sac fly to RF getting the Cardinals on the board.
The game's momentum changed in the bottom of the 5th. Abby Roche hit the ball over the CF's head for an inside the park HR. Annie Simon singled after and advanced to 2B on an error. She made it to 3B then was thrown out at home on a questionable catcher's interference non call for the second out on a ball hit to 3B by Kate Harrington.
Next batter Klaric proceeded to crush a ball to LF for an inside the park HR scoring her and Harrington. Funk reached on an error, so Sadie Prow entered as a courtesy runner for her. Caroline Dick also reached on an error setting the stage for 2 runners on and 2 outs when Kolby Curry stepped to the plate. She drove a ball to deep RC field scoring both Prow and Dick with a triple. At the end of the inning, the game was tight at 8-6 Ryken.
In the top of the 6th, Funk pitched a 1-2-3 inning with the highlight play at 1B with Curry catching a laser beam line drive for the 2nd out. The Cardinals got runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs via a Roche smash for a triple and a Simon walk but failed to score either runner.
Funk held St. Mary's Ryken scoreless in the 7th. Down 2 in the bottom of the 7th with the game on the line Dick walked after 1 out. Curry walked next. Claire Schlereth lined out to 3B and both baserunners stayed safe. Kasey Williams stepped up and both runners advanced after a wild pitch. Williams sent a double to RF scoring both runs. Tie ball game with pinch runner Kaden Lyle on 2B. Simon stepped up and drove a base hit to RF knocking in Lyle, sealing the victory with the Cardinals winning on a walk off 9-8.
