Bishop Ireton Football Head Coaching Change
Coach Chip Armstrong has decided to resign as the Head Football Coach here at Bishop Ireton. Coach Armstrong was an assistant coach for the Cardinals in 1985 and assumed the head coaching role from 1991-1994 during which time the team was the 1992 VISFA State Champions, the 1993 WCAC Champions and Chip was named the 1993 WCAC Coach of the Year. In 2018, he returned as an assistant coach and was named head football coach in 2019. Bishop Ireton has been blessed by his love of BI, his care for the students and his tremendous efforts to build our coaching staff and football program, which had an outstanding season this past spring in the midst of adjustments during the pandemic. Chip Armstrong remains a faculty member in the science department, and he will surely be missed on the football field.
As Coach Armstrong steps away, BI is pleased to announce that Coach Gary Wortham Sr. has agreed to be the Interim Head Football Coach for the Fall 2021 season. Gary Wortham was a vital member of the BI Football coaching staff this past year while serving as the Associate Head Football Coach. Coach Wortham (known as "Coach G" by our players) brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our football program and our athletic department. From 2015-2019, he served as the Head Football Coach at Woodbridge High School where he was named the 6A Region C Coach of the Year and where the team was a state semifinalist, tied the school record for wins with 12 and was the third ranked 6A team in Virginia. Before that, he was the Head Football Coach at Freedom High School from 2010-2015 (where the team had two regional playoff appearances) and an Assistant Football Coach at Robert E. Lee High School from 1999-2001 and at T.C. Williams High School from 1992-1999.
He is known for building football programs that create a high-level of energy, produce college level players and bring excitement for his players and the school community. Coach Wortham is also known for going above and beyond for any student athlete who aspires to play at the next level or to simply improve as an athlete. He has a proven track record of developing players while, at the same time, exposing them to colleges and universities across the country. While coaching at Woodbridge High School, he sent dozens of players to play in college including four straight years of at least four Division 1 signees.

Coach Wortham wants the BI community to know that the student athletes are in good hands. In his interim role, he is very excited and eager to get started with camps and in the weight room, and he will soon be sending out information to those interested in playing football on what's to come this summer and in preparation for the fall season.
