Boy's Varsity Tennis Ends First Week of Season 1-1

Starting a season with four straight road contests, in three different localities, spread over 175 miles can be a daunting task for a young team.   Varsity men's tennis opened their 2021 regular season this week, splitting two matches on Monday and Thursday.

On Monday, April 26th, the Cardinal netters opened their season against VISAA #6 Seton School, losing 6-3 in Manassas. Playing #1 singles, Freshman Drex Rieder won 8-6 to put the visitors ahead early. Close matches at #2 and #3 singles didn't go the Cards way.   Senior Luke Pilot posted a 8-5 win at #5 singles.  Junior Matt Sendi and Freshman Val Schroeder took a tight 9-7 win at #2 doubles to round out the Cardinals win total.   Luke and Junior Jack Grzebien lost a tight match at #3 doubles 8-5.

On Thursday, April 29th, the young BI team traveled to Washington DC to take on the St. Anselm's Abbey School Panthers.  Freshman Matt Antonio cruised to a 8-3 win at #2 singles.   Matt Sendi won 8-1 at #3 singles to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.   Val Schroeder clinched the match for the visitors with a clutch 9-7 win in hot, humid conditions.

The 3-2 win over St. Anselm's evens the Bishop Ireton men's tennis team record at 1-1.  Keep up with men's tennis on Instagram @Cardinalstennis.
