The Cardinals Varsity Hockey team overcame an early deficit last Friday night to notch a 5-4 victory over the W.T. Woodson Cavaliers.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Coach DiCarlo’s squad evened the score behind second period goals from Graham Kalan ‘20 and James Purpuro ‘19. Kalan’s breakaway in the last minute of the second period gave BI its first lead of the night 3-2, but Woodson leveled the score in the first minute of the third period. The fast-paced back and forth continued through the final stanza, with the Purpuro brothers (Robert and James) teaming up for BI’s fourth goal. The Cavaliers again evened the game at 4-4 with five minutes to play. Both teams continued the frantic pace until a slashing penalty sent off Robert Purpuro with 1:28 left. The Cardinals had already killed four penalties in the game, but were not going to settle for another tie. Seventeen seconds later, Graham Kalan blocked a pass, broke out and beat the Woodson goalie for his hat trick and a 5-4 Ireton lead. The Cardinals killed the remaining penalty with ease to secure the win. The return match-up with West Potomac is February 1 at 9:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon RECenter. Come cheer on your Cardinals to victory!
