Boys Varsity Soccer Defeat JPG at Home Game Opener

The Boys Varsity Soccer team started the 2021 campaign today at home against John Paul The Great. It was a great beginning to the season, as the boys earned a well-deserved 2-0 victory against a very strong opponent. The team was a bit nervous at kickoff, but shook off the nerves quickly and grew into the game.

Our first break came midway through the first half, with a free kick awarded to us on the right hand side in John Paul The Great’s half. Max Kuzmenko, our right back, sent a kick into the box, which deflected to Santiago Miller. Miller capitalized on the rebound, sending a low volley shot into the back of the net for the first goal. The 1-0 lead held through the first half, with the Cardinals defending well.

The second half started with our opponents striving to even the score, but our stout team defense frustrated their efforts, and we were able to exploit the open space in their defense on the counterattack.

After battling for over 65 minutes, a Cardinal player was fouled at midfield, and Santiago Miller sent a quickly-taken free kick to our right winger Tyreke Fairclough, who took a great first touch and finished with a cheeky second touch to put the Cardinals 2-0 up.

John Paul The Great did get a penalty awarded to them in the 75th minute, but goalkeeper, Arthur Seng, denied the goal with a fantastic save, and Seng’s efforts throughout the 90 minutes earned him Man of the Match honors. After the final whistle, the boys rallied around Seng and lifted him up after the win.
