Wrestlers Honor MVP, Cardinal winners

Bishop Ireton had less than half a dozen returning lettermen to start the wrestling season. But, among the five, they proved it isn't always "how many" as "who" you have around you.  Juniors Finn Sofleld and Jack Ambrey were honored as the squad's most valuable performer adn Cardinal Awardee for the 2019-2020 campaign.
After graduating 12 seniors last season, the wrestling team started off a tough year with only 5 returning wrestlers.  Leading the pack with a record of 37-14 is MVP Finn Sofield.  Finn was unable to finish the 2018-19 season due to having broken a growth plate in his shoulder, but he more than made up for it training in the off-season.  Finn went undefeated at the Diocesan Duals, the Alexandria City Duals, and the VISAA Duals.  He took 4th at the Ireton Classic, 3rd at the Hornet Holiday Classic, 1st at the St. Stephens Classic, 2nd at the Commonwealth Classic, and placed 4th at the VISAA State tournament, making him an all-state wrestler and qualifying him for the National Prep Tournament.

The Cardinal Award goes to Jack Ambery.  Jack started wrestling as a freshman at BI and shows what hard work and dedication can do.  Coming off an 11-33 record his Sophomore year, Jack rallied to an impressive 29-23 record this past season.  He was undefeated at the Alexandria City Duals, placed 4th at the Ireton Classic, 1st at the St. Stephens Classic, and 5th at the VISAA State Tournament, making him a National Prep alternate.

The wrestling team is looking forward to having both these athletes back next year.
