High School Placement Test and Pre-HSPT

High School Placement Test

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a nationally recognized standardized test that is used as part of the admissions process at Bishop Ireton High School. The test is for current 8th grade students that are applying to a Catholic high school in the Diocese of Arlington. The two and a half hour timed exam includes subject areas consisting of verbal skills, quantitative skills, reading, mathematics and language skills. The results of the HSPT are used as part of both admissions consideration and scholarship consideration as well as to determine course placement should the student be admitted to Bishop Ireton High School.

The HSPT may only be taken once, and the test can only be taken by 8th grade students.

Students attending middle schools in the Diocese of Arlington will take the exam at their school. Students in the Diocese of Arlington who miss that testing date and students who attend other private or public schools must register with Bishop Ireton to take the exam (at right).

If you have any questions, please contact the Admissions Office at

HSPT 2020-2021

Details on the 2020-2021 High School Placement Test will be available soon. Check back here in the coming months for information about how to register.

Pre-High School Placement Test

Bishop Ireton will offer the Pre-High School Placement Test (Pre-HSPT) in 2020. The Pre-HSPT is intended to help students become more familiar with the different sections of the HSPT under timed conditions. The Pre-HSPT is a practice test. It is scored using 7th grade norms with all of the same scoring and reporting services as the HSPT.

The results of the Pre-HSPT are not used in the high school admissions process. It merely provides a snapshot of your child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and early feedback to identify performance gaps.
