letter from the head of school

Founded in 1964 by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop Ireton High School is a Catholic college preparatory school in the City of Alexandria, Virginia that serves students from across the Washington Metropolitan area in grades 9 through 12. As a Salesian community, Bishop Ireton challenges students to Advance Always in scholarship, service, and in the love of God and one another.

I am excited to be at BI as it embarks on an exciting new chapter  of growth. As a graduate of Paul VI High School where I was taught by the Oblate Fathers and i am overjoyed to be the Head of School at an institution where Salesian spirituality is thriving.  Francis’s teachings emphasized Christ’s desire to unite all people to God.  In this way the gentleman saint anticipated the Second Vatican Council’s universal call to holiness by four centuries.  This same call to holiness and service is a constant theme of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.

One of my core responsibilities is to ensure the advancement of Bishop Ireton in a way that accords with and promotes our Catholic identity.  The Salesian expression, “Be who you are and be that well,” pervades the campus and is a reminder that the present moment is where Christ calls us to become the saints God wants us to be.

Those of you already committed to the school know that B.I. is a close-knit community with deep faiths, sharp minds, and generous hearts. I often ask parents why they chose the School for their child.  Many have shared that it was a daughter or son who made the choice first.  Among the top reasons for their decision:  Ireton’s commitment to the priorities of the Catholic faith; the high academic quality and enthusiasm faculty have for their subjects; and the individual attention students receive from teachers, counselors, coaches, and staff.

Please take some time to look through our website and the variety of academic, athletic, social, artistic, and sacramental opportunities available at Bishop Ireton.  If you are a student or parent considering Ireton as a prospective high school, I hope you will visit us soon.  Let me extend a personal invitation to come tour our facility, attend classes, say a prayer in our chapel, enjoy a tasty lunch, watch a game, and meet our excellent staff.  I am positive you will find that the same spirit of joy that I have experienced is equally infectious.

Live Jesus!

Advance Always,
Thomas J. Curry, Ph.D.
