Eye on BI
March 2014

Sean O'Malley Scholarship Fund
To honor the memory of Sean O'Malley, a BI student in the 1980s
The scholarship is provided through the generosity of Sean's family, former
classmates and teammates, his clients, and his many friends and fans to
recognize the qualities which enabled him to move from an un-recruited
"walk-on" out of high school, to an ALL-SEC defensive lineman and member of the ALL-SEC Academic Team at Ole  Miss and put his passion into successful practice as he created a world-renowned fitness company - Cardio Coach.

Ireton Business Network

The new "business directory" on the website will connect our Alumni to shared  business opportunities like never before on a daily and weekly basis.

Membership to the Ireton Business Network is free and open to all of our Bishop Ireton and St. Mary's Academy Alums. We encourage all alumni to sign up today.

A new jobs board will be added to the IBN Website by this spring.

Laying the Cornerstone

Bishop Ireton's cornerstone was laid in 1963 and it's doors opened in 1964.  Each of you has been a part of our great tradition through your dedication and sacrifice.  You are the foundation to a project that remains unfinished.

As in the past, your Annual Appeal helps BI underwrite costs associated with tuition and operations.  This year the Annual Appeal will: fund well deserving students, upgrade science labs, expand professional development, improve lighting and security, upgrade the landscaping and parking lots, and returf Fannon Field.

We look forward to having you back on campus!  It is great to be a Cardinal!

Please consider giving to the 2013-2014 Annual Appeal.  Click here to donate.

Alumnus of the Month
Michael Bennett '72

"Qu'est ce que c'est. "Those were the first words that came to mind when, as Alumni of the Month, I was asked to write a few words.

Fr. McKay, Fr. Gavin, Fr. Greene, Fr. Norman, Fr. O'Neil, Mr. Umbeck and Mr. Wheelock all contributed to my development at Bishop Ireton. But it was an Oblate priest, French teacher, and ultimately good friend, who went out of his way to set me on the right path. Fr. Robert McNally recognized abilities in me that I had not yet discovered. When you're a snot nosed high school sophomore, it's easy to ignore advice, especially from a teacher. But Fr. McNally never gave up. He challenged me to do better, study harder and apply myself.   "Advance always". This advice followed into other subjects and life in general. "Do not wish to be anything but what you are and try to be that perfectly." Thank you to all the Oblates, and especially Fr. McNally, for helping me become the person I am.

I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters and five grandchildren. Michel '93, Kelly '95 and Tracy '98 were fortunate to also attend Bishop Ireton. And it's with a new found pride that I purchase a Cardinal sweatshirt that reads "Grand Dad", when my granddaughter Sawyer continues the tradition and attends BI in September 2014.

Since the Fall of 1968 when I first walked the halls of BI to when I walk the halls today, I feel such a sense of pride knowing the Alumni have taken such great strides in making Bishop Ireton not only a wonderful school, but a great community.

I thank Bishop Ireton and especially the Oblates for being such an integral part of my life. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve on the Board of Governors, various committees, and especially the golf tournament over the past 25 years. It has been a delight and pleasure working with the younger alumni. I am so proud of my school.

I can't finish without acknowledging Dr. Tom Curry, the new Head of School for Bishop Ireton. He is a wonderful individual who welcomes feedback from the Alumni. I'd also like to give a nod to Fr. Kevin Nadolski, OSFS and the work that the Oblates still do today.

"Be who you are and be that well."
