Annual Fund 2014-2015
The Annual Fund supports Bishop Ireton's greatest needs.

As we constantly adapt to innovations and challenges, your Alma Mater puts Annual Fund dollars to work on crucial projects such as updating campus infrastructure, improving educational tech, and renovating athletic facilities, as well as supporting the ongoing need for student financial assistance.

Striving in Our Mission to continue providing a superior Catholic college-prep community of learning, our greatest need is to bridge the gap between the true cost of the Bishop Ireton Education and what tuition alone can supply.
To help our students.

Currently, we are able to provide 50% of the financial assistance
our students and families need.

We have set our sights on a 2014/15 Annual Fund goal of $450,000.

Help us get there!

Join your fellow alums, current and past parents, teachers, and friends

in helping us achieve and surpass our Annual Fund target.

50th Anniversary Prayer Book
Seeds of Our Salesian Tradition
An integral part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, an advance copy of the new B.I. Prayer Book, Seeds of Our Salesian Tradition, was presented to Bishop Loverde during our Mass of the Holy Spirit on Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.
There has been such a tremendous response from the community that we have decided to make this a living document in order to accommodate all offerings!
Alumni contributions are wanted and welcome, so please e-mail us your prayers.
Alma Mater Needs You!
Speaking to a classroom full of students on a subject about which you are passionate and expert is one of the best ways an alum can give back to B.I., and is a great opportunity to connect with our current students, showcasing the tight-knit community with which Ireton is so blessed.
We are still looking for alums to speak in the following subject areas:
  • Business Ethics, specifically with regards to Environment/Green Initiatives/Living, Peace/Justice Concerns/Initiatives
  • Law (Criminal/Civil), Legal Studies
  • Stocks & The Market, i.e. what the Stock Market is, why people should be investing, and how to evaluate a stock for purchase.
  • Writing in any profession and the importance of written/verbal communication
If you are interested in being a guest speaker,
please e-mail T.J. McBride or call (703) 212-5184.
Thank You to all who have responded so far.
We'll get you into a classroom soon, because
the students and staff are eager to hear from you!
Alumni of the Month
David & Gretchen Schrote Rhedmon,
B.I. '68 & SMA '78
The Alumni Association's "Dynamic Duo" enjoying a little "down time."

David serves on the Ireton Business Network's Executive Committee, Gretchen, on the Alumni Association Board, and together, their dedication is a powerful force for the good of Ireton.
In their own words:
Gretchen - "In the summer of 1974 there was a lot of talk in the swimming circuit about a great coach at Bishop Ireton-St. Mary's Academy and I decided at once that I wanted to swim for him. My parents were all too happy to comply and I began at SMA that fall. I had never attended a private or parochial school and quickly realized the advantages of having good academics, an excellent swim coach, and spiritual growth all under one roof. It formed the basis of a home life I would later provide for my children and the leadership skills and respect that I use daily as a pharmacist. From the sisters I learned the benefits of hard work, and from Harry Sober I learned how to make that hard work fun. With that knowledge and attitude under my belt all it took was a little perseverance to realize life's successes. Some of my luckier moments were when my path would cross with a B.I. or SMA grad. It was always a delight meeting them, even when they were my instructor, and I always felt a special bond to them."

David - "When classes began in the fall of 1964 the building at Bishop Ireton was yet to be completed. We walked across planking over construction debris and mud to the gymnasium/auditorium where every student assembled for both class and Mass. The mess wasn't enough to distract Father Mellon who sent me home that first day to get a haircut - an inauspicious beginning for a shy 13-year-old at best. Like many high school boys, I wasn't an exemplary student. I was younger and smaller so athletics were not appealing and I had no musical talent. In spite of that, thanks to the commitment of the Oblates, I got an education and graduated with Bishop Ireton's charter class of '68 then went on to graduate from Villanova in 1972. I now own my own electrical contracting company and live in Alexandria. Six years ago I lured Gretchen Schrote back here from Richmond and we married in 2009."

"Our appreciation and gratitude to B.I./SMA is something we share, so working with fellow alumni to sustain Bishop Ireton is both natural and fun. The planned alumni events involve well rounded grads from multiple classes who enjoy meeting one another, sharing a beer, catching up, and engaging in mildly(?) competitive bowling or golf. Every year a new crop of grads, younger ones of course, appear at the events and we don't want that to stop, nor do we want them to miss out on the quality education we received. For this, we are committed to keeping the Oblate spirit bright through participation, involvement, and a little work....  ...a little fun work that is."
Advance Always! Gretchen and David Rhedmon
