Alum Bball 2016 Tip-off
Friday evening, 5 February, turned out to be a great night for fans of Cardinal Basketball past and present. A big J.V. win over the Lions of Archbishop Carroll set the stage for a fun and fast paced Alumni Game, with quite possibly the largest turnout ever!
An '88-'89 Varsity mini-reunion
26 alums from as far back as the class of '74 and up to '11 took the court to the delight of the fans and lit up the Godley Gym scoreboards. Old teammates picked up right where they'd left off, and you'd never have known they hadn't seen each other in years.

After the game, all enjoyed a feast in the Whaley Auditorium Atrium and stayed to watch the Varsity Cardinals continue the success of the night by putting down the WCAC rival Lions, 57-47.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who put in the time and effort to make this year's Alumni Game such a success, especially Dan Blaine '03, Rick Mondloch '77, Brandi Vasquez '05, Kevin Curry '77, Kathy Gutmann, and A.D. Bill Simmons.

Here's looking forward to next year!
The Annual Alumni Basketball Game is played early in each New Year.

6th Annual Alumni Bowling Challenge
Nothing like a Night on the Lanes...
The 2016 Bishop's Cup Recovery Team
Bowling 2016_Get that Spare
Presented with the challenge of needing to find a new home for our bowling team, we found new digs in Fairfax, right in the Panthers' backyard!

Bowling 2016_Alright!This year's stanza of the Bishop's Cup Bowl-Off brought a great crowd of more than 30 B.I. & SMA alums out to face off against Paul VI, some veterans of the lanes, some brand new faces, all welcome. The goal Thursday night, 11 February, was to wrest the trophy from Panther paws and restore it to its rightful home on Cambridge Road... and we were ready!

Everyone was out to have a good time, bowling, carousing, and sharing stories of time at Ireton and SMA... and THAT goal was achieved. The contest's trophy may remain with the Panthers for now, but there's always next year... and I'd rather have a team of hundreds of good friends than one Bishop's Cup!Bowling 2016_Team in Action

Thanks to all who came out
... and remember: There's less than a year until our next try,
So Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!
5th Annual Parent & Alumni Retreat
Parables of Mercy: Celebrating the Jubilee Year
Salesian Retreat 2016_Reflection
Reflecting on the meaning of Mercy

A snow squall that covered the Cambridge Road campus in minutes could not dampen the spirits or deter alums and parents from coming out on the brisk morning of Saturday, 13 February, to make this year's Salesian Retreat.

Salesian Retreat 2016_BreakfastIn observance of Pope Francis' declaration of an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy and led by veteran Ireton teacher, Br. Rick Wilson, T.O.R., we explored the meaning of mercy and ways to cultivate it amid life's inevitable challenges, examining the central spiritual insights necessary to share compassion, patience, kindness, and forgiveness with the world.

Brother used the medium of film to help illustrate examples of mercy, showing clips and vignettes from Franco Zefferelli's biopic of St. Francis of Assisi, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, David Lynch's The Elephant Man, and John Ford's 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck's iconic The Grapes of Wrath. Small group discussions gave us the opportunity to reflect on and share our observations from the films, helping us deepen our own understanding of what mercy really is and how to practice the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy better in our daily lives.

This retreat is held in February each year and has become an important and much anticipated event in the spiritual life of the Ireton community.
If you weren't able to join us this time, please remember to look out for word and set aside a weekend in late February 2017 for the next one!
Planning is well underway, so let us know if you can help your class put together a great Reunion!
Festivities of the weekend will include:

evening Reunions for the 1s & 6s
Sunday, Oct. 9 -

There are MANY more details to follow for all classes,
but we still need Reunion Representatives to get the ball rolling for Grad Years

Brendan Caldwell '92
An alumnus of the Bishop Ireton Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Brendan currently serves as Director of Wind Ensembles at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio.
In his own words:
"As I look back on my life's journey since graduating from Bishop Ireton High School in 1992, two words encapsulate the most essential lessons I learned there: Advance Always. This motto has become a personal mission statement, serving as a compass for my life's journey. I continuously seek to apply this creed to my professional goals, my personal relationships, and my spiritual communion with God.

"The phrase Advance Always would have had very little impact on my life if it was simply a school motto embedded on the crest of a polyester blazer. However, at Bishop Ireton this motto infuses itself into the very fabric of the community through teachers, staff, and administrators who embody its sentiment every day. One shining example of this commitment to Advancing Always is Dr. Garwood Whaley.

"Dr. Whaley is an exceptional educator and artist whose contributions will long influence the field of music education. And while I could share many professional citations and international accolades that confirm his professional impact, I would like to take a moment to share Dr. Whaley's influence on my own personal journey as a conductor.

"Since graduating from Bishop Ireton, my professional journey has taken me to places I once thought impossible. My musical career has taken me all over Europe, North America, and Asia, and has afforded me the opportunity to be a part of exceptionally rewarding collaborations with world class artists in esteemed ensembles like The Cleveland Orchestra.

"Ultimately, my journey has led me to the position of Director of Wind Ensembles at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio, where I have the profound privilege of working with astonishing artists who have the highest possible artistic aspirations, as well as the drive to develop themselves personally and spiritually. At Baldwin Wallace, I conduct the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teach conducting, and lead a seminar using a book I authored entitled The Buddha and Bruce Springsteen.

"While these professional opportunities have all been cherished blessings, these are not the achievements on which I gauge my career. Rather, I seek to use Dr. Whaley's example as a compass and examine the lasting impact music has had in my students' lives. I seek to encourage my students to Advance Always by modeling vision, perseverance, and passion - the attributes Dr. Whaley modeled to his students and that subsequently have had the greatest influence in my life. Likewise, these are the attributes that I use to measure my career as a music educator, each day asking myself 'How do I model the attributes that encourage my students to Advance Always?'"

On March 11th, Brendan will conduct the Baldwin Wallace Symphonic Wind Ensemble in a performance at the Kennedy Center entitled,
Advance Always. The concert is a collaboration with the Bishop Ireton Symphonic Wind Ensemble to honor Dr. Whaley's significant contributions to the field of music education. The concert will also feature a performance by Ireton alum
Pat Roulet '86 and the premiere of internationally acclaimed composer Clint Needham's latest piece entitled, Advance Always.
