COURSE 812

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

COURSE SYLLABUS

Required Text:      Weixel, Suzanne, and Jennifer Fulton, Faithe Wempen, and Catherine Skintik, Learning Microsoft Office 2007—Deluxe Edition, Pearson Prentice Hall DDC, Upper Saddle River, NJ.  (This text is provided for classroom use.)

Floyd Fuller & Brian Larson, Computers, Understanding Technology-Brief, 2nd Edition, EMC Paradigm Publishing, St. Paul, MN, 2005 (ISBN 0763820946).  Students should purchase this Text plus Multimedia CD-ROM from Varsity Books (www.varsitybooks.com).  Or, they can purchase a used copy from a previous 812 student.

Classroom Materials:

Each student must bring to every class a two-pocket folder labeled with his/her name, the teacher’s name, course number and section ID, as well as a pen and a sharpened #2 pencil.  The student will also need a 1” white, three-ring binder (with his/her name clearly marked) that will hold all handouts, class notes, and graded work.  This binder will be kept in the classroom until the end of the course, and, then, returned to the student.

Grading Policies:

Grades for class exercises, any homework assignments, portfolio, and quizzes and tests will be determined on a point basis comprising 95% of the grade for each marking period. A class participation grade (5% of the grade) will reflect a general assessment of the student’s daily preparation for learning by having required materials, attentiveness, conduct and demeanor in class, and making worthwhile contributions to class discussions and the progress of the class. Grades will reflect the completeness and quality of the work submitted, the degree to which directions were followed, and the neatness and manner of presentation. Also, a  comprehensive final exam will be given to the 812 classes on the homework textbook and the in-class, usage-based component of the course at the end of the semester; the final exam is worth 20% of the total grade.

With the exception of homework assignments, all work must be completed in the Bishop Ireton computer labs.  Make-up exercises and quizzes must be completed in a computer lab under a teacher’s supervision; homework textbook tests are made up in the testing center.  File sharing of any course-related work constitutes cheating and violates the Bishop Ireton High School Honor Code. Grades will be assigned based on the percentage of possible points earned and converted to letter grades according to the Bishop Ireton High School grading scale.

The class normally completes at least one exercise/assignment daily in class.  Should a student be absent, he/she must bear in mind that he/she has missed some work that needs to be made up.  The teacher bears no responsibility to remind students of missed work.  Since assignments often build on previous ones, it is imperative that missed or incomplete work be made up fairly soon after the student’s return to school.  The student gets a zero on missed work if it is not completed one week from the date it was first done in class.  Students should plan to take advantage of the after-school computer lab (Room 203) that is open from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day except Fridays and early dismissal days.

Homework Policies and Information:

Any homework assignments and test dates will be posted on my web page on the Bishop Ireton High School website as they occur.
