Model United Nations Program

Historically, the Model United Nations Program was established over fifty years ago after the inception of the United Nations Association. The Association traces its founding to 1943 and the birth of the American Association for the United Nations (AAUN), a citizen-based organization led by Eleanor Roosevelt and dedicated to educating Americans about the U.N. and global issues. In 1964, the AAUN merged with the U.S. Committee for the United Nations, composed of 138 national organizations supporting the work of the world body, thereby creating the United Nations Association of today. The Association has a proud tradition of preparing young people for global leadership through the study and discussion of multilateral issues. UNA-USA helps to bring the U.N. to life for some 200,000 high school and college students through the Model U.N. program based on authentic simulations of the General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council. (Courtesy of UNA-USA) Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly, U.N. Security Council, or other multilateral body, which catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. In Model U.N., students step into the shoes of ambassadors of U.N. member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to debate current issues on the Organization's vast agenda. The students, better known as "delegates" in Model U.N., prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the U.N.'s rules of procedure-all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth. Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model U.N., students do research on the particular global problems to be addressed. The problems are drawn from today's headlines. Model U.N.ers learn how the international community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization (Courtesy of UNA-USA)

The goal of the BI Model UN Program and Club is to facilitate our students in learning about the world of international diplomacy, the dynamics of geo-politics, and develop and hone debate and research skills. The program is excellent for those students who are interested in pursuing a career in the international community, government service, the business world or academics. It is my desire as the Club Moderator to provide a unique learning experience and "opportunities to excel" for our students. To fully participate in the BI Model UN Club experience it is necessary for students to attend the various training sessions and practices that are held throughout the academic year. Obviously, students who immerse themselves in practice, training and research will do quite well in representing Bishop Ireton High School at the conferences and events.
