CLUB MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

The BI Economics Club is open to all students of the school. There are no special requirements or pre-existing knowledge or skills that the student must have in order to participate in the club.

Meetings for the club will occur on a monthly basis from the period September 2008 - May 2009. Meetings will be scheduled to be held in Room 213 from approximately 3:15 - 4:00.

Because of the requirement for funding to participate in the Stock Market Game, membership in the club is free, however their is a cost of $10.00 for each Stock Market Game (fall or spring) over the year. However, any student who has genuine financial difficulty will not be denied membership based on an inability to pay the Game participation fee.



CLUB CHARTER


Purpose:

The Bishop Ireton Economics Club known as the BI Economics Club is established with a goal of promoting economic education among the students, their families and the staff of Bishop Ireton High School.

Concept:

The BI Economics Club members will participate in the "Stock Market Game" (SMG2000) which is an electronic simulation of Wall Street trading, designed to help students and adults understand the stock market. Students will be placed on teams of two individuals for a ten week period from 29 September - 5 December 2008 and 2 February - 15 May 2009 in which they invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), American Stock Exchange (AMEX) and the NASDAQ Stock Market (NASDAQ).

Goals:

Students involved in the BI Economics Club will develop a familiar knowledge with the fundamental principles of the free market economic system. This will include understanding the operations of the various stock markets, the principles of stock ownership, the associated costs of financial transactions and the development of capital for economic growth.

Those participating actively in the BI Economics Club will develop or improve problem-solving skills. The BI Economics Club will:
· Develop and improve mathematical problem solving skills
· Develop and improve analytical problem solving skills
· Reinforce an understanding of current world events and:
the interdependence of global economics and
financial market responses to world events.
· Develop and improve research and writing skills.
· Foster decision making skills and an understanding of group dynamics.
· Reinforce technology skills such as use of the Internet, preparation of business correspondence, and familization of business and economics vernacular.
· Meet the economics requirements of the Standards of Learning (SOL's) as outlined by the State of Virginia Department of Education.

New York City trip to the Financial District

BI ECONOMICS CLUB
"In God we Trust, All Others Pay Cash"






The BI Economics Club members will participate in the "Stock Market Game" sponsored by the Virginia Council on Economic Education (VCEE) which "is an electronic simulation of Wall Street trading, designed to help students and adults understand the stock market." Students will be placed on teams of two individuals for a ten-week period in either the fall or spring of the academic year. Once on teams, the students will invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), American Stock Exchange (AMEX) and the NASDAQ Stock Market (NASDAQ). The student goals are to increase the value of their holdings in their financial portfolios. Parents and Students may visit Stock Market Game web site at http://www.smgww.org/ for additional in-depth information about the operation of the game. All students participating in the game will be provided a packet of materials that contains instructions on how to play the game as well as a user ID and a password.
